Ten Great Christmas Movies
The tradition of Christmas movies is as common as hot chocolate on a chilly night. These family Christmas movies are about showing compassion for others, appreciating your loved ones, and avoiding crass commercialism. Why not cuddle up with family or friends while watching one of these Christmas classics:
1 – A Christmas Story (1983)
Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), a young boy growing up the ‘40s, wants nothing more for Christmas than an official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model BB rifle with a compass in the stock. Christmas is drawing nearer and Ralphie visits Santa at the department store in hopes of asking him for his dream gift. Will he receive it?
2 – A Christmas Carol (1951)
In this classic Charles Dickens story, Ebenezer Scrooge is given one last chance to learn the error of his ways through the appearances of the ghost of Jacob Marley, his former and now deceased business partner, and three other spirits from Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas future. This wonderful tale reminds us of the importance and true meaning of Christmas.
3 – Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Kris Kringle, the real Santa Claus--is hired to play himself at Macy's Department Store, New York City. His gentle spirit and magical powers soon influence those around him, including a little girl and her world-weary mother. Capture the spirit of Christmas with this timeless classic!
4 – National Lampoons’ Christmas Vacation (1989)
An all-time favorite of families everywhere, National Lampoons’ Christmas vacation is filled with hilarious holiday miss-adventures generally caused by the head of the family, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase). One instance is when Clark is installing his extravagant Christmas lights. He slips, catches the rain gutter causing it to dislodge and launch an ice spear directly through the window of his pretentious neighbors, leaving them with and unsolvable mystery a rather large mess. This movie is guaranteed to have your whole crowd in stitches!
5 – Frosty the Snowman (1969)
Frosty the Snowman was a jolly happy soul with a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal. This timeless classic about a snowman that springs to life when the children place a magic hat upon his head is a movie that the whole family can enjoy. The tale has a poignant lesson for us all, to enjoy what we have before it ‘hurries on their way’.
6 – The Santa Clause (1994)
This witty and imaginative movie stars Tim Allen playing Scott Calvin, a divorced dad who is upset when he finds out that his ex-wife (Wendy Crewson) and her husband (Judge Reynolds) are trying to rid their 6 year old son of the “childish” notion that Santa Clause doesn’t exist. While Scott Calvin and his son are reading ‘The Night before Christmas’, they receive an unexpected visitor on their roof. When the go to investigate, they startle Santa making him fall and disappear, leaving his coat and instructions to the person that puts in on in case of an accident (the clause). Watch this endearing movie to see what adventures this father and son duo encounter!
7 – Elf (2003)
Will Ferrell is hilarious in this movie about a baby in an orphanage, Buddy, who crawls into Santa’s bag and gets taken to the North Pole to be raised by elves and later goes on an adventure to New York City to find his biological parents. To his dismay he has the big job of getting someone he loves off the ‘naughty list’ and onto the ‘nice list’. Follow Buddy as he experiences the city at Christmas in a way that only an elf could!
8 – Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1948)
A fantasy story about a reindeer named Rudolph who has a red nose who spends his adolescent years with his misfit friends. When Santa’s sleigh gets fogged in on Christmas Eve, will Rudolph have a chance to finds his place?
9 - Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
An all-time favorite of people everywhere, Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, is a story of a lonely Grinch who can’t stand the thought of the Whos’ in Whoville having a happy and joyful holiday. He hatches a plan to ruin Christmas by stealing all the material items involved in the Whos’ traditional Christmas celebration. Will Grinch have his way and spoil Christmas or will he find out the true meaning of the holiday?
10 – Gremlins (1984)
For those of us who like a spooky movie every now and again ‘Gremlins’ is a great one to get your heart pounding. Set during the holidays, a father coming home from a business trip stops in Chinatown to get his son a gift. He settles on a fuzzy, loveable pet known as a Mogwai. He takes the pet home with specific care instructions; never get the pet wet, keep it away from bright light and never feed it after midnight. As young boys often do, the son is not careful to hold to these rules. What results is a movie filled with mischief and mayhem!
